The 1859 Liberty Head Half Eagle is one of the truly underappreciated Philadelphia No Motto fives of the late 1850s, and this AU58-level survivor offers the exact combination of originality, scarcity, and visual appeal that advanced gold specialists seek. Both obverse and reverse display a sharp, smartly executed strike. The surfaces are dressed in rich original yellow-gold to light honey-rose coloration. Considerable mint luster still rolls through the fields, confirming the near-Mint character of the piece, while only light field abrasions keeping it from full Mint State status. With a tiny mintage of just 16,734 pieces and an estimated survival of only 75 coins across all grades, the 1859 is far more elusive in the marketplace than many better-publicized branch mint counterparts. In fact, we think pricing is completely off. Given there have been no PCGS sale for almost a decade we can see why it is tough to price this coin. In this lofty state of preservation—where few true Mint State examples are available—this piece represents an important opportunity for the collector of scarce, original pre-Civil War U.S. gold, offering premium quality, strong visual integrity, and meaningful long-term collector appeal.
