Liberty Head $20
The 1859 Liberty Head $20 Double Eagle is a significantly underrated rarity within the Type One double eagle series, particularly among Philadelphia Mint issues. With a low original mintage of just 43,597 coins and a PCGS survival estimate of only 302 examples in all grades, the 1859 is infrequently encountered on the market and is seldom available in high-end preservation. In terms of overall rarity, it ranks as the second rarest Philadelphia Type One behind only the legendary 1861 Paquet Reverse. Auction appearances are sparse, with no CAC sale for years. This makes sense given there are only 16 CAC approved examples in all grades, and this is the lowest at that. The last CAC sale in any grade was over 3 years ago. Today CAC XF40 has a value of $10,000. This particular example offers exceptional luster with a warm, medium-gold hue, layered with subtle orange-gold and pale copper accents that dance across the coin. Given the fact that almost no double eagle with a survival estimate in the hunderds and that is CAC sell for less mid 5 figure much less 4 figures speaks volume to this coin.
