The 1858 Inverted Date Half Dime is one of the more interesting U.S. coin varieties. Apparently the engraver punched the date into the die upside-down, then punched it incorrectly after realizing his mistake. The underlying, upside-down date is still visible in the die and clearly shows the mistake, even on lower-grade examples. This is a very scarce variety, and less than 10% of the certified 1858 Half Dimes show the Inverted Date. Mint State examples are rare. The offered example is simply stunning. The obverse depicts an easement of pastel color as it fades from the rim to the center. The reverse is perhaps even more interested are there are deep die crash all over that adds a high level of authenticity to the piece. While at first glance the coin appears to be mint state there is minimal wear seen in the field hidden by the toning. There is no AU50 price record and this will sit nicely for any astute collector. Only 3 CAC finer known which represents a bang for the buck as these sell for thousands in low unc.
