From a mintage of just 3,477 struck, 175 are only know today in all conditions. Dahlonega mint has always been a collector favorite and this is one of the more affordable pieces relatively speaking. In AU this coin is rare and extremely tough in choice condition, as only 8 coins are cac including resubmissions in all grades and from both grading companies. Most 1858-D are poorly struck with doubling seen on the legend; however the offered piece is much better than the average with only slight weakness on the reverse as per the issue. Because of only a few cac coins exist, there exists no cac auction records. The only comps are non cac pcgs examples at lower grades au50 for $3,480 and an xf45 pcgs at $3,781. AU53 cac thus represents an excellent value.
