Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
As per David Akers " This (1858) and the 1859 are the scarcest Philadelphia Mint quarter eagles of the 1850's. Both dates are underrated and the 1858 is really surprisingly difficult to obtain in choice condition." With a low mintage for the P-Mint series and an even lower number of survivors at around 200, this 1858 Quarter Eagle date has only recently started picking up an appreciation of how rare it actually is.
Sharply detailed in most areas and with lustrous orange-gold surfaces add to the considerable eye appeal. The 1858 quarter eagle is elusive in Mint State with a Price Guide of $2,750 at MS62 and this example displays pleasing satin luster, along with scattered small abrasions that define the grade. Slight strike softness is noted in the centers. Finer examples are few and rare.
