Liberty Head Double Eagle
This PCGS-certified 1857 New Orleans Liberty Head Double Eagle Gold coin represents a highly sought-after key date within the series, with an estimated 200 pieces remaining from a limited mintage of just 30,000. The rarity of numerous New Orleans Double Eagles from the 1850s can be traced back to their low mintages, largely due to the limited amount of gold bullion received from California after the commencement of coinage operations at the San Francisco mint in 1854.
This selectively rare specimen remains elusive even in lower grades. This choice AU example is stunning, with design elements boldly defined and most retaining their sharpness. The strike on many 1857-O Double Eagles tends to be weak, but this example is remarkably well struck. Most of these coins entered commercial circulation and consequently exhibit extensive wear and abrasions. However, this specimen remains smooth, with only one or two notable marks. A uniform coloration on both sides is accented with orange colorations reminiscent of fresh citrus. While it does not sport a CAC sticker, we believe this coin has all the bells and whistles. During a period when 'big gold' sticker rates are notably low, it is prudent to focus on acquiring the coin rather than the holder. Last AU50 PCGS sale was for $13,200 11/23 ST and $13,200 08/18 ST.
