We have handled our fair share of high-quality Three Cent Silver pieces, this 1857 Trime stands out as an incredibly well-preserved example. Depicting subdued colors, the coin showcases a harmonious blend of gentle hues.  The antique toning encases both the fields and devices becoming more brilliant toward the coin’s center. Under a light the coin illuminates a yellow sun and straw gold color from the center outward towards the edges with purple and lilac hues. Although the initial mintage exceeded one million, continuous circulation in commerce has dwindled the surviving number to a mere 1,500. These Three Cent Silver pieces were the first coins minted in the U.S. with significantly less metal value than face value. Unlike other silver coins of this era, which had more metal value and were hoarded and melted. This 1857 Three Cent Silver is a Type 2(II), Large Star with Three Lines. This is a rarer variety of Trime housed in an NGC OH Fatty Holder with hologram intact from the early 1990's, and we have seen less choice 65 than this example. Only recent comp was a MS64+ PCGS CAC that sold for $2,880 08/23 ST.
