This extraordinary 1857 Flying Eagle Cent stands among the very finest known examples of this elusive and highly coveted proof issue. Hailing from the prestigious Wright Flyer Collection, this remarkable Gem Cameo Proof showcases deep, jet-black mirrored fields contrasted by a fully frosted, sharply struck eagle — a presentation so bold that the central motif appears to glide gracefully across a reflective, nighttime sky ( as can be seen clearly on the obverse holder image). The surfaces are pristine, with preservation of the highest order, showing only faint lint marks typical of the era and no notable imperfections under magnification. The 1857 Proof Flying Eagle Cent holds a key position in the series, tied with the 1858 Large Letters as the rarest proof issue of the type. According to renowned expert Ron Guth, the 1857 proof is substantially rarer than the more celebrated 1856, with PCGS census figures as of 2011 listing just 59 certified examples—a stark contrast to the more than 700 proofs reported for the 1856 ( except of course from some of the low mintage 1856 varieties) The estimated original mintage of approximately 485 pieces suggests a limited production run, with far fewer known survivors in cameo designation. Struck from fresh, polished dies at an early proof die state, this Snow-PR die marriage delivers the exceptional depth of field and high-relief cameo contrast that define the best of the series. Only five examples are graded higher across all services, placing this offering firmly within the upper echelon of known survivors. The coin’s color and surface texture underscore its superb eye appeal: the obverse shines with a warm golden-champagne glow, enriched by peach, pale copper, and rose-bronze highlights, with faint iridescent flashes of violet and powder-blue adding vibrancy under angled light. The eagle’s frost stands boldly against the mirrored fields, delivering the classic cameo contrast so coveted by proof enthusiasts. The reverse continues this theme, with a pale golden-tan backdrop, accented by russet-orange and soft copper tones, framed by a delicate bronze-gold and honey-brown halo. Subtle reflections of peach-gold and faint rose shimmer within the recesses of the bow and wreath, enhancing the presentation's depth and texture. Exceptional strike quality brings full articulation to every element—from the eagle’s plumage to the finely detailed cotton bolls, corn husks, and ribbon on the reverse. The immaculate surfaces exhibit semi-satiny reflectivity, reinforcing the originality of this early proof striking and offering visual drama from every angle. Widely recognized as one of the most visually stunning and technically superior examples of the 1857 proof issue, this cameo-designated Gem represents a premier acquisition opportunity for the discerning numismatist. We thought this coin would have graded higher, but safe to say that currently CAMEO designated proof Flying Eagle Pennies are incredibly hot and here is a knock out opportunity.PCGS Graded, CAC Approved & Eagle Eye Photo Sealed.
