Flying Eagle Cent
The 1856 Flying Eagle cent stands among the most historic and universally admired small cents in American numismatics, a landmark transitional issue born from the Mint’s mid-1850s effort to replace the cumbersome large cent as rising copper prices forced experimentation with smaller formats and new alloys. Struck in a very limited quantity primarily for presentation, die testing, and Congressional approval, the issue occupies true “blue-chip” status within the hobby, with enduring demand across every grade tier. The present example is an extraordinary Superb Gem that fully lives up to that reputation, offering icy-smooth, virtually pristine surfaces that immediately convey elite preservation. On the obverse and reverse, the flying eagle is razor sharp and boldly frosted, but the coin posses an attractive rich-red brown hue throughout. Under magnification, the surfaces are remarkably free of distracting marks, with no individually mentionable ticks, lines, or flecks, preserving the kind of absolute cleanliness that defines the finest survivors. The result is a coin of breathtaking technical quality and visual sophistication, unquestionably among the most beautiful Superb Gem Flyers one could hope to encounter. Supported by a PCGS Price Guide of $45,000, a PCGS population of 63 with only 13 finer, and a CAC population of 27 with just 4 finer, this is a top-end example of one of the most important pattern-to-regular-issue transition coins in the entire U.S. cent series. The last PR65 PCGS CAC sold for $45,600 02/25 HA, but we prefer this coin any day. Look at the eye appealing of this compared to any other example. More recently, a lower grade PR64 PCGS CAC sold for $31,200 08/25 HA also for a S-9. Having sold the Screaming Eagle collection, we are pleased to say this example here is as nice one can expect from a GEM grade.
