Uber Popular San Francisco Quarter Eagle, 1856-S $2.5 has long been collected among Quarter Eagle collectors and Type Collectors. Incredibly rare in uncirculated with an estimated 15 known in all grades, we see how rare this MS63 PCGS CAC example is by the frequency with which this date has sold in over 20 years - 2 ( 1-NON CAC and 1 CAC - 10 years ago, the exact same example offered today) Having been out of the market for 10 years from when this was purchased at $11,575 08/12 HA, today this coin has a CAC value of $15,100 and a PCGS Price Guide of $12,500.

Since then this coins desirability and rarity has started becoming evident as we now realize the ultra high grade MS65 & MS67 from the SS Central America are one of conditional rarities. Only 175 1856-S $2.5 are known today in all grades and condition from a mintage of 72,120 (0.24% Survival Rate) A condition census tied for 8th finest, this is a superb example. No CAC MS64 has ever sold but a NON-CAC MS64 sold for $15,600 02/21 HA. As described when this sold 10 years ago by Heritage "Since the 1854-S quarter eagle is a fabulous rarity and the 1855-S is nonexistent -- none were struck -- the 1856-S two and a half is the first collectible S-mint issue in the series. This is a well-struck example, free of singular marks with orange-gold surfaces and greenish accents at the rim, the latter likely caused by remnants of silver alloy in the gold." A CAC Pop 2 with only 7 graded finer!
