This 1856-D $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, graded AU53 by PCGS and further endorsed by CAC, is a thoroughly original and highly appealing Choice AU survivor of one of the most underrated issues in the entire Dahlonega gold series. Both obverse and reverse display handsome honey-apricot to rose-orange coloration, with warm, satiny luster still glowing across the protected areas and around the legends, imparting a rich, wholesome appearance that is entirely consistent with original premium Southern branch mint gold that is often seen with a bleached light gold hue for dipped or cleaned examples. The skin and color alone for a gold piece makes this a standout example but combined with the souther gold mint allure makes this coin prized. The strike is fully typical for the date and mint, but the level of preservation is notably above average, resulting in superior eye appeal for this elusive issue. Struck to the extent of just 19,786 pieces, with an estimated survival of only about 400 coins in all grades, the last sale was for a different AU53 PCGS CAC example that sold for $9,150 06/26 HA, but the eye appeal and color of this coin is worlds apart. Safe to say CAC prices for more common D mints and circulated grades are out of date.
