The 1856 Liberty Seated Quarter marks the Mint’s return to the pre-1853 design by removing the arrowheads that had flanked the date from 1854–1855. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this No Motto issue remains a somewhat challenging date in the series, with an estimated survival of approximately 2,000 pieces in all grades. This remarkable specimen, graded PCGS AU55, resides in a secure holder and has earned the Gold CAC designation — an affirmation of the coin being under-graded. With a CAC Gold population of just 1/0, this piece occupies the absolute pinnacle of its grade classification. Olive and steel shades add depth to the coin. Its frosty and satin textures, along with original luster and toning, give it a balanced, vintage look. We believe PCGS mistook the toning on the high points and field as wear. With a 62 CAC worth around $650 and a 63 CAC at $850, we believe this coin a great piece for a type set.
