Estimated Only 15 S-5 Are Known! Pop 1/0 Finest Example. This remarkable 1856 Flying Eagle Cent, attributed to the elusive Snow-5 variety, is struck from the original proof die pair. Bearing the Eagle Eye Photo Seal as well as CAC, and pedigreed to the distinguished Wright Flyer Collection, it combines elite technical quality with distinguished provenance. The Snow-5 variety, believed to have been produced during the earliest presentation striking period of the Flying Eagle cent, is seen through a prominent mint-made point beneath the “U” in UNITED and a centering dot below the upper-left serif of the “N” in CENT—diagnostic features first documented by Rick Snow in 1992. This example represents the first state of use for both obverse and reverse dies, which were later repurposed for Snow-2, -4, -6, -7, -8, and -9 varieties. With just an estimated 15, these early strikes are thought to have been special presentation pieces. The coin is preserved at an extraordinary Superb Gem Proof level, with deeply mirrored fields and surfaces that approach PR66 quality. A single, minor contact mark above the ON in ONE on the reverse is the only notable imperfections, attesting to its originality. The dies display pronounced polish and heavy striations—hallmarks of early preparation and limited use. Visually, the piece offers rich aesthetic appeal: the obverse glows with a warm coppery-brown base accented by reddish-bronze and cinnamon-red at the periphery, while soft peach-gold iridescence highlights the eagle’s wings. The reverse complements this with golden-bronze surfaces infused with russet-orange and apricot highlights around the wreath and ribbon under angled light. Subtle cameo contrast graces the fields, which exhibit a semi-satiny texture and full strike revealing intricate feather and wreath details. Combining finest-known status, superb technical preservation, and pedigree, this offering represents a rare opportunity to acquire the highest-certified and arguably most important example of the Snow-5 variety—an exceptional presentation piece from the earliest proof strikings of the Flying Eagle cent series.
