Approximately 20 struck and just 10 confirmed survivors, the Snow‑4 variety of the 1856 Flying Eagle Cent stands as one of the rarest and most historically significant die pairings of the series—and the only known example featuring the Low Leaves reverse, a design element not introduced until mid‑1858 for the Small Letters subtype. While around 1,500 proofs were struck across all 1856 varieties, over 99% employed the standard High Leaves reverse, making this Low Leaves pairing an extraordinary anomaly in U.S. numismatic history. The defining diagnostic is the presence of short, stubby inner leaves near the C and T in CENT, in contrast to the longer leaves characteristic of the standard design. Its pairing with an 1856‑dated obverse suggests a later striking, likely executed in mid‑1858 using a leftover obverse die mated to the newly‑introduced Low Leaves reverse die. The obverse displays a soft golden‑apricot tone with a peripheral glow of bronze‑gold and cinnamon‑orange, accented by subtle iridescence in lavender, pale rose, and blue around the legends. The eagle’s frosted devices stand out against the moderately prooflike fields. The reverse features a peach‑silver center framed by amber‑gold and honey‑tan hues, with glints of powder‑blue and soft violet highlighting the inner wreath. The strike is razor‑sharp throughout, revealing full feather and wreath detail, and the surfaces remain well‑preserved. No auction record exists for a PR63+ CAC example. With its highly unusual die combination, historic production context, and exceptional eye appeal, this Snow‑4 example is a cornerstone piece for advanced collectors of Flying Eagle proofs and transitional die —uniting rarity, beauty, and historical significance in a single offering.PCGS Graded, CAC Approved & Eagle Eye Photo Sealed.
