Originally minted for Congress with a mintage 800 as all S-3, this 1856 Flying Eagle Cent certified as PCGS PR64 with CAC approval represents one of if not the most beautiful proof S-3 we have seen. This particular example resides within the mid-die state of the Snow-3 progression and is among the earliest strikes following the polishing of the dies, evidenced by the presence of distinct vertical die polishing lines on the reverse—a unique diagnostic not observed other S-3 specimens. The devices showcase pronounced cameo contrast against deeply mirrored fields, the result of highly polished dies, lending the coin a prooflike appearance though not designated. The assigned grade of PR64 accounts for a few light marks—amplified by the reflective fields—the piece delivers the eye appeal and technical quality of a true Gem Proof. While Snow-3 is among the more available varieties, it remains far scarcer than the frequently encountered Snow-9, with few surviving in high-grade proof format. Rick Snow’s commentary from 2001 underscores the significance of this piece, noting that only rarely does this die pairing exhibit such prooflike surfaces and strong strike characteristics—suggesting that a small pre-production run of proofs may have been struck, making true proof S-3s a statistical anomaly. While the obverse glows with rich golden-bronze luster, accented by copper-rose, amber-orange, and lilac-violet highlights, and the reverse features a silvery-golden foundation with peach-apricot and coppery-rose hues complemented by delicate lavender, mauve, and powder-blue accents. Razor-sharp definition, glassy mirrored fields, and light natural spotting—all indicative of originality—complete the presentation. With PCGS reporting just seven examples graded PR64 for the Snow-3 variety and none finer, and no recorded CAC-approved sales for this, the offering stands as a significant opportunity for advanced collectors seeking a top-tier example of this historically important issue.
