Estimated 10-12 Known. This 1856 Flying Eagle Cent is attributed to the exceedingly rare Snow-1 variety, distinguished by its iconic “Tilted ONE CENT” reverse. Representing the very first die-trial prototype of the Flying Eagle cent series, this pairing is produced of the earliest strikes of 1856. Fewer than a dozen examples are confirmed today—including two long considered lost—and only four certified pieces are graded equal or higher. A PR64 example sold for $100,000 3 years ago in the Doug Wright sale and now in the Aurelian Acquisitions set. Meanwhile, the PR58 sold over a decade ago for $35,000. This example bears the Eagle Eye Photo Seal and CAC approval and combines technical importance with undeniable visual appeal. The fields are mirrored beneath a rich chocolate-brown surface. This characteristic warm coppery tone is seen on all genuine Snow‑1 coins, counter to earlier speculation by Walter Breen (1977) that these were pure copper—a theory disproven in all but one known specimen. The surfaces exhibit two small, well-settled contact marks—one near the O in OF and another beneath the N in CENT—which account for the assigned grade, with natural toning layered into these areas. A diagnostic die rotation causes the eagle to appear ascending - the only for the type. A truly unique attribute when the reverse wreath is held level - a mesmerizing sight, as can be seen in the obverse holder image. The unique Tilted ONE CENT legend resulted from an error at the master-die stage, creating a minting anomaly that was permanently retired after this limited use. This Snow‑1 offers an extraordinary opportunity for advanced collectors to secure one of the rarest and most historically important 1856 Flying Eagle cents known. PCGS Graded, CAC Approved & Eagle Eye Photo Sealed.
