The 1856 Flying Eagle cent is one of the most important U.S. small-cent issues. Struck from a mintage of just 1,500 pieces, this 1856 Flying Eagle Penny Cent is represented here by an exceptionally high-end, beautifully preserved Gem example with outstanding toning. Both sides exhibit reflective, watery fields beneath richly developed copper-nickel coloration, blending warm bronze, amber, and orange-rose hues with mottled overlays of golden brown, cinnamon, and chestnut. Pale gray, sandy beige, and muted cream oxidation appears across portions of the fields, creating striking contrast and a distinctly original, variegated appearance. The devices are razor sharp, whilst subtle pastel iridescence—violet, lavender, faint magenta, and occasional steel-blue—emerges near the rims and lettering, adding depth and chromatic complexity. Exceptionally bold eye appeal defines this toned rarity, supported by a CAC population of 71 and 31 finer, a PCGS Price Guide value of $27,500, a most recent CAC example selling for $31,200 08/25 HA. A normal PR64 PCGS CAC would cost around $28,500 today; however, this coin has all the bells and whistle and finding a toned Proof Flying Eagle penny cannot be overstated. A non-CAC similarly toned 1856 1C PR64 PCGS CAC sold for $29,890 01/26 HA. This coin has to be seen in hand to relish the true color.
