Condition Census and Important Liberty Half Eagle, we are pleased to offer the third technical finest, 1855-S $5. With an estimated 135 known in all grades and just a few in UNC, this example is a PCGS Pop 1 and a CAC Pop 1. Only 2 PCGS examples are certified finer off which only 1 is CAC and both locked in permanent collections. Comparing the PCGS Coin Facts image of the MS61 to this AU58+ PCGS CAC, we clearly see some discoloration and numerous bag marks as one would expect from an MS61. In contrast this AU58+ PCGS CAC example has incredible surface, more akin to a MS64+. Moreover, the color and patina that this coin exudes is one of the best we have seen - lustrous green-gold mixed envelops the coin, and when twirled is a real show stopper. No doubt this will bring a record price and as such you should throw away any records of which no COMPs or APR exists. A recent original Fairmont lower grade AU55 PCGS non-CAC sold for $6,000 06/22 which had a lot of marks. Where is the slight wear on this AU58+ PCGS CAC we are not sure, certainly we do not see any on the high points. This will be a highlight, and we much prefer this coin to the MS61 CAC, as we are sure most would.
