1855-S $3 AU58 PCGS CAC
Three Dollars
The 1855-S Three Dollar Gold Piece is a key first-year San Francisco issue, struck from a limited mintage of 6,600 pieces with an estimated surviving population of roughly 400 examples in all grades. This PCGS AU58 example, endorsed by CAC with 2 other ranks at near the top of known survivors and is clearly suited for advanced collections and registry consideration. Considering there is a single example 1 CAC finer that costs over $300,000 that is locked in a top registry collection. Both sides display strong originality and cohesive visual balance, with a consistent medium yellow-gold foundation. Residual satiny luster remains evident in the fields and protected design elements on both obverse and reverse, producing subtle yet discernible cartwheel movement under angled light and lending the coin a near-Mint presence appropriate for the grade. The only relevant auction comp is for a S.S Central America example AU58+ PCGS CAC which in our opinion did not look as nice for $36,000 11/25 SB. This is the finest you can obtain and should obtain this date, given the 1 finer is locked in a permanent collection which sold for $264,000 in 2022 and worth much more today.
