Three Dollar
With a significant reduction in mintage to only 50,555 coins struck in Philadelphia, compared to almost triple in 1854—this 1855 Three Dollar Gold issue is both rarer in total and particularly elusive in higher grades. Near-Mint State examples with CAC endorsement are exceptionally desirable and seldom encountered, making this coin a standout for collectors in this Three Dollar Gold series. With original reddish-gold toning and gleaming mint luster, this 1855 $3 as one of the more challenging $3 gold coins to find in high condition, holds strong appeal for advanced collectors. Mint State or near-Mint examples are far rarer than the more common 1854 or later dates such as 1874 and 1878. No recent APR exists though in lower grade AU55 PCGS CAC one sold for $2,340 03/24 HA, whilst the more common 1854 $3 AU58 PCGS CAC sold for $2,520 12/24 ST, which has more than three times the number of survivors compared to this underrated date.
