Liberty Head Eagle
Struck during the inaugural year of operations at the San Francisco Mint, the 1854-S Liberty Head Ten Dollar represents the first year of eagle production from this historic western facility, making it an important issue within the Liberty Head eagle series. This AU50 PCGS example, further endorsed by CAC for quality within the grade, presents an attractive and well-preserved appearance for the issue. In fact when we saw this we thought it would have graded atleast AU55 thanks to amole luster seen throughout. Though the 1854-S half eagle and quarter eagle are famous rarities from this historic first year of San Francisco coinage, the 1854-S eagle remains a collectible and historically significant issue with a modest mintage of 123,826 pieces and an estimated survival of approximately 475 examples in all grades. This piece stands as a high-quality representative of the type, offering pleasing color, strong remaining detail, and solid eye appeal that is further confirmed by its CAC approval. The CAC Price Guide was $3,950 before a steep drop to $3,300, with a CAC population of 13 examples approved at this level and 40 finer. Interestingly this example is also a MPD-FS-301.
