In 1854, the U.S. Mint altered the design of the quarters adding arrows to each side of the date to signify a decrease in weight from 6.68 to 6.22 grams. These alterations were kept in '55, and the coins were minted at three different mints - Philadelphia and New Orleans in '54, and San Francisco in '55. The rays on the reverse were eventually removed allowing for longer die life. A total of 12,380,000 were minted at Philadelphia in 1854 but are very rare in GEM Mint State. At MS66 this coin is in the Condition Census at Pop 4 at NGC with about less than a dozen finer combined between both PCGS & NGC. Most importantly this is an important type coin for its short lived series and is the more affordable of the two. With a Price Guide of $22,500 both at PCGS and NGC and PCGS comps at much higher, no NGC MS66 has sold in the past 25 years. We find this coin representative of excellent value and can see this being listed by other dealers at 50% more than our price. Considering the coin has satin luster over uber original devices with no hits or marks and ultimate originality we like this example for the value, type, rarity and price.
