A New Orleans double eagle is always a treat to behold, given its low mintage and collectability. This 1853-O Double Eagle PCGS XF40 is an original, unmolested example with supreme preservation. Most examples of this date on the market are cleaned and have non-original surfaces. Just a hit or two holds this back from CAC endorsement. The mintage of 71,000 suggests rarity with only about
350 of these remaining in all grades, a signficantly small number considering how there are nearly 1 million 1927 $20 that exist today. As such finding a NOLA Double Eagles to buy in this day is a rare treat to find. This is one of the lowest-graded and cheapest examples for this rare date as in AU these quickly climb towards $20,000 with AU58 PCGS CAC selling for $36,000. The last pcgs XF40 comp was 3 years ago for $6,450 07/21 DL while NGC XF45 now sell for $6,600 05/23 HA, all of equal quality in our opinion. We think our example is well struck and has good eye appeal comparatively.
In 1853, New Orleans was a melting pot of cultures and a crucial center for regional and international trade. It is a vibrant city and is known for its rich cultural heritage. The port was of strategic economic importance and a key for the cotton industry. The fact that any coins made it this well-preserved out of commerce is amazing.
