The 1853 Arrows and Rays Liberty Seated Quarter, a one-year Type 3 issue struck exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint, occupies a pivotal position in American numismatic history as a product of the 1853 weight reduction enacted to return silver coinage to circulation after widespread hoarding. The addition of arrows at the date and rays behind the eagle served as a clear visual marker of this monetary reform, and the brief lifespan of the design has long secured the issue its status as a cornerstone type within the Seated Liberty series. This example presents as an original Mint State survivor with sound technical quality and notable visual depth for the grade. The obverse is anchored by a soft silver-gray to light steel-gray foundation, over which complex, naturally developed toning has formed in layered iridescent bands along the periphery and around the date. Light contact marks confined to the fields and fully consistent with grade. Certified MS61 by PCGS and approved by CAC, this coin is further distinguished by the absence of recorded CAC sales at the MS61 level, with the most recent CAC-approved MS62 example realizing $2,040 04/23 HA three years ago for a non-toned example, at the same time a choice OGH AU58 also sold for $2,640 03/22 HA. For those requiring one example we would recommend one with some pizzazz - like this.
