The Single rarest New Orleans Liberty Half Dollar date. From the entire series, general mintage have been 2-3 million per year with some as high as 7 million produced for New Orleans half dollars. But for some unknown reason, only 144,000 were produced in 1852 at the mint. Though relatively available in lower grades in AU, the rarity jumps. Not only does this date have the title as the lowest mintage New Orleans half, but it is also the rarest in mint state with an estimated 6 known. At ms62 this coin is a POP 2 with only a few finer. The last cac sold in 2010 for $8,050, with no new additions to the census. A genuinely rare and undervalued date, which at auction should bring more today a decade later.
