The U.S. Assay Offices in cities like San Francisco and New York played a pivotal role in regulating gold coinage during the Gold Rush era. They meticulously assayed gold deposits and converted them into standardized coins, ensuring authenticity and quality. Stamped with the U.S. Assay Office hallmark, these coins were issued in diverse denominations, particularly impacting the western United States by facilitating trade, stimulating economic growth, and contributing to the establishment of a dependable monetary system where gold was a primary currency.

This 1852 $10 U.S. Assay Office PCGS AU55 CAC piece is a unique and rare example. Two varieties of this coin were struck, Kagin-12a and Kagin-12. This example is a Kagin-12, which is a great rarity identified by a different alignment of the reverse legends. The coin is well struck by all standards, uncommon for pioneer gold and for U.S. Assay pieces in particular. This example is mostly olive green with some highly attractive orange gold on the reverse, featuring an attractive original patina. In the past decade or so there are 2 PCGS CAC sales for AU55 for $17,625 08/13 HA, and $16,450 09/14 HA. More recently, two grades lower a PCGS CAC AU50 sold for $14,400 01/23 HA and a non-CAC PCGS AU55 for $14,400 01/24 HA. Given the how U.S. Assay Office gold pieces are highly sought after by collectors and numismatists for their historical significance and rarity, representing a specific period in American history when gold played a central role in the nation's economic development, this coin should out perform the previous mentioned Auction Price Records ( APR).
