Liberty Head Double Eagle
Following a modest production of 141,000 pieces in 1850, the New Orleans Mint substantially increased double eagle output to 315,000 coins in 1851. The surge in California gold influenced these mintage figures, resulting in this year boasting the highest number among New Orleans Double Eagles. Consequently, it is typically the most frequently encountered year. However, survivors are scarce, particularly when compared to the Philadelphia-minted issues of 1851, 1852, and 1853. Mint State survivors are exceedingly rare, with most examples having survived purely by chance. Demand for New Orleans Double Eagles is consistently high, further complicating the task of finding an example. This uncommonly smooth and well-struck specimen would be an ideal addition to a Southern Gold set or advanced Double Eagle collection.
The striking detail on this coin is predictably bold for its issue, with most design elements sharply defined or fully rendered. Notably, the strike is exceptional for an O mint Double, and the coin is remarkably smooth for its assigned grade, boasting outstanding eye appeal. With only 1,279 examples remaining today in all grades, do not hesitate to secure this one for your collection. Last sale in NGC was for $5,040 02/22 HA.
