New Orleans Liberty Eagles are popular wants for gold, type, $10 and O-mint collectors. Among those of interest 1851-O $10 is a rare date in AU and higher. Of the 263,000 struck, only 775 are known today in all grades. Most of the 775 are heavily abraded with scratches and nick throughout the fields and rim. The present example is unique among all other 1851-O $10 as it has a very attractive orange gold shade of color in contrasts to the sea green typically seen. Secondly, the coin most noticeably lacks any abrasion. In fact the surface is soo mark-free one begs to question why it isn't grade an au-58 for this fully struck example. The last comp for this issue was a non-cac pcgs au55 that sold for $2,720, whilst cac au55 examples more or less around there, none of which posses the level of authenticity, color and surface preservation as this piece does. An interesting point to note on all 1851-O $10 there exists a hollow ring on the reverse on the second shield, a mint made error, adding great character to this date.
