1851-C $2.5 F15 PCGS
1851-C $2.5 F15 PCGS
Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
Although the 1851-C quarter eagle has a higher mintage than the 1850-C, it is slightly rarer overall and in higher grades. The striking quality of the coins minted in Charlotte during this year varies, with some displaying satisfactory strikes while others show below-average to poor strikes. The survival estimate of this date is only 125 examples and is a scare issue across all grades. The total mintage for this PCGS Low Ball example is 14,923. This coin is one of only two in its grade at PCGS, tying for the lowest graded in the 1851 Charlotte $2.5 Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle series. Despite its low grade, it retains eye appeal, with well-defined devices. Given that most examples are not well struck, this coin possesses considerable detail. The scarcity of this date adds to its challenge in acquisition, with no previous sales recorded at this grade or in similar conditions. Trying to acquire this coin would be reasonable to find one circulated condition which would cost likely between $3,000-$4,000, but anything cheaper would be unlikely. In fact there has been no sale of any circulated grade up until AU55 in the past 3 years for this date.
