Liberty Seated Half Dollar
The 1851 Seated Liberty Half Dollar is a popular and rare date within the Liberty Seated series, boasting a mere 500 estimated survivors in all grades. This date’s scarcity is attributed to the bullion market conditions of the early 1850s, during which the intrinsic silver value of these coins exceeded their face value—leading to widespread hoarding and melting. As a result, the vast majority of this issue was lost, making examples in all grades highly elusive. No VF35 example has been recorded in auction since 2018, while an XF45 sold $2,640 01/25 HA, which did not have any toning nor eye appeal, whilst a VF30 that barely had any toning sold for $1,895 09/24 GC. This coin displays exceptional eye appeal, with its obverse boasting vibrant, multi-hued toning, transitioning from golden hues to rich blues, deep purples, and fiery oranges along the periphery. The coin’s strike remains strong with honest wear through out the coin. The PCGS Price Guide estimates its value at $2,400.
