The 1851 Liberty Seated half dollar is a conditionally challenging, low-mintage issue from the height of the California Gold Rush, and this example stands out for its exceptional quality and strong originality. Both obverse and reverse display vibrant, undisturbed mint luster that flows evenly across the surfaces, beneath a refined layer of natural toning that blends soft silver-gray with subtle blue and champagne accents near the periphery. The overall eye appeal is outstanding, with a cohesive and balanced look that immediately conveys careful preservation. A truly exquisite Gem Uncirculated survivor, this piece ranks among the finer known examples of the date and would be a standout addition to an advanced Liberty Seated half dollar collection. With an estimated survival of just 500 pieces in all grades and extremely limited CAC representation of a pop 2 and only 2 finer—no recorded sales in MS64, though a non-CAC sold for $7,800 04/22 SB, and a single MS65 CAC example realizing $15,600 in December 2025 which frankly was not attractive—this coin offers both rarity in grade and compelling long-term appeal. PCGS Price Guide lists $9,500. We find this example undervalued, bear in mind a MS62 PCGS CAC sold for $4,800 01/25 HA, and a NGC MS65 non-CAC will cost approximately $8,500 today.
