Important New Orleans Liberty Seated Quarter, 1850-O 25C from a mintage of 396,000 only 550 have survived. The number of survivors is uncommonly low for the issue as typically thousands would survive for similar dates. Interestingly, 1850-O 25C most are found in low circulated conditions and anything finer than XF is a prized rarity - an XF45 PCGS CAC is worth around $1,000. This is because most examples were worn, lost in circulation and because of a run-up in silver price in the early 1850's thus most were melted. To make matters worst, most 1850-O 25C were poorly struck, either from rusted or worn out dies thus the peripheries are almost always missing. According to Larry Briggs in his The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters, 1991) a small hoard of 5 or 6 Mint State examples entered the market in 1986. We are able to very easily see which is which as we look at the auction records when comparing most of the CAC examples in AU58 PCGS CAC ($3,500 03/20 DL) MS63 PCGS CAC ($6,300 03/18 ST) as most original examples were dark and toned and ones that have been dipped or un-original tend to have bright silver colors - NON-CAC. This particular MS61 NGC CAC example, 1 of 3 CAC, has golden-apricot hues through out and is uncommonly mark-free for the grade. Whilst the strike is typical of the high grade 1850-O: aptly struck in the centers but poorly struck and weak near the denticles. There has been no CAC sale in any surrounding grade except for AU58 PCGS CAC for $3,500, and this MS61 NGC CAC represents great value.
