Single most rare Type One gold dollar, 1850-C G$1 has the second lowest mintage of any Charlotte gold dollar and is the second rarest gold dollar after the ultra rare 1849-C G$1 Open Wreath ($500,000+ coin). From a mintage of just 6,966 pieces, 125 are known today in all grades. Marred by grainy texture, poor planchets, bad eye appeal and weak strike for all 1850-C, this example differs in that it is fully struck, has superb eye appeal and does not have the typical granular surface. Uncommonly lustrous for the issue, this example has Proof-like surface and in todays standard, this coin would likely grade PL as well as grade technically higher. With original deep-green accented by orange-gold hues, the example has sharply struck devices with very few marks for this cameo like surface. Among the finest survivors, and as a MS62 tied for the 5th, though likely Second Finest by todays grading standard in our opinion. Regardless of the census position, this is the only CAC approved uncirculated piece out of 12 in all grades and the finest at that. There are 2 MS62 CAC comps both of which are over a decade old: $18,400 06/12 HA and $25,300 02/10 HA and neither of which was an OGH nor as choice as the present example. No CAC example has sold in the past 10 year and we can only image how strong this would sell at auction today. 10 years later and with far more attractive eye appeal, fully struck devices void of marks and housed in an OGH CAC POP 1 MS62 we are pleased to offer a near finest Charlotte Gold Dollar.
