The 1849-O Seated Liberty Quarter is one of the key dates in the Seated Liberty series and a highly prized rarity among New Orleans coinage. With an original mintage of only 16,000 pieces, survival estimates suggest that approximately 450 examples exist today in all grades. This rarity underscores its importance in the series, as recognized by the Liberty Seated Collectors Club, where it ranked third among the Ten Greatest New Orleans Seated Coins (March 2008 issue of the Gobrecht Journal). Larry Briggs describes this issue as "very rare in XF," making high-grade examples particularly desirable. This specific coin shows a blend of natural gray giving it exceptional eye appeal and a "circ-cam" look in hand. The obverse features bold details in the shield and eagle. Interestingly to further underscore the rarity, this coin has only 3 examples approved by CAC finer, 2 in 58 and 1 in 63.
