Like most No Motto half eagle issues, the 1849 is rare in Mint State. This 1849 Liberty Head $5 Half Eagle, graded PCGS MS61 and approved by CAC, represents the finest certified example at this level and hails from the prestigious Pittman Collection. With a survival estimate of just 175 pieces in all Mint State grades, this issue is an undeniable rarity in high grade—especially among the No Motto half eagles, which are seldom encountered above AU. This example is notable for its vibrant apricot-gold and sun-kissed yellow-gold luster, with butter and olive-gold undertones that glow from protected recesses around the stars, devices, and dentils. The surfaces exhibit an even, satiny frost, while cartwheel luster rolls effortlessly across both sides, highlighting its originality and premium eye appeal. Liberty’s portrait is sharply struck, with clear separation in the coronet and finely rendered hair curls. As a die variety known as the “earring” type, this coin features a raised die mark on Liberty’s earlobe—a quirky and desirable diagnostic that adds to its appeal among specialists. The reverse is equally attractive, showing bold definition in the eagle’s wings, shield, and scroll, with golden brilliance enriched by subtle hints of coppery warmth and soft green-gold tone in the recessed fields. Recent sales confirm strong market demand, with this MS61 CAC example realizing $4,320 11/24 HA. With a CAC Price of $4,650 and PCGS at $5,250, we love this example, but more importantly the luster and coin looks without a doubt better than a MS61 coin. We believe the market agrees. This coin represents an excellent purchase for an advanced collector pursuing original, high-quality pre-Civil War U.S. gold, Half Eagles with an exceptional pedigree.
