1848-C $2.5 XF40 PCGS CAC
Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
The 1848-C $2.5 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a fascinating and scarce issue from the Charlotte Mint, with a mintage of just 16,788 pieces. This coin becomes exceptionally rare and undervalued, with only 175 estimated survivors. The present example is one of just two at this level with only 19 finer in CAC-populated coins. Its light yellow-gold surfaces retain significant traces of luster, with bold to sharp detail across the design elements, offering eye appeal and exceptional preservation for the grade. The strike quality, often an issue with Charlotte Mint coins, is above average here, making this an important find. Ranked ninth in high-grade rarity among the 20 C-mint Quarter Eagles, the 1848-C is even scarcer than its mintage suggests, with much of its rarity attributed to strike quality. The PCGS Price Guide values it at $4,000, and the CAC Price Guide at $3,900, no auction record exists for a PCGS CAC in this grade.
