Lowest Graded PCGS & CAC example. This 1846-O Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a highly elusive Southern gold issue, struck at the New Orleans Mint and distinguished by its sharply defined devices and rich, original coloration. From a reported mintage of 62,000 pieces, survival estimates suggest that only around 175 examples exist today in all grades, underscoring its status as one of the scarcest No Motto quarter eagles from the branch mint. Yet these are affordable and available. The present example is housed in an old holder and exhibits outstanding originality, with warm medium-gold surfaces enlivened by deeper golden-orange shades nestled within the recesses of the design. This exact example sold in 2021 for $1,401 02/21 GC. For the Southern gold specialist, this example represents an important acquisition for less than $1,500.
