Liberty Head Eagle
Out of a total mintage of 20,095, only 105 examples of this 1846 Liberty Head Gold Eagle are known to exist, although this figure may be somewhat inflated due to resubmissions. With just two coins graded by PCGS and only twelve in better condition, labeling this as a rare Philadelphia No Motto issue would be an understatement. These early-date Liberty Gold Eagles have experienced a recent resurgence in interest. Discerning collectors recognize the future value inherent in these low mintage dates, especially given the scarcity of MS examples. Choice coins displaying excellent eye appeal in the XF range, coupled with CAC approval, are quickly being bought up. This exceptional coin displays sharp striking and remarkably smooth surfaces, maintaining high-caliber original coloration. In 1988, Akers deemed the 1846 Eagle grossly underrated, echoing sentiments like its 1845 counterpart. Challenging to find in any condition, most specimens are VF/EF, highlighting its true rarity and underappreciation compared to other U.S. coins. Last XF40 CAC sale was for $2,880 08/23 ST, but this is significantly nicer with its patina and skin. Two XF45 PCGS CAC sales at $4,080 03/23 ST and earlier for $4,560 12/22 HA.
