1843-O Half Eagle is an important Numismatic offering as the first variety from the New Orleans Mint, which is seen in Large and Small Letters. The Small Letter Variety has a mintage of 19,075 compared to the Large Letters 82,000, and with only 120 Small Letters known today in all grades compared to 275 Large Letters; thus the Small Letters is at least 3 times rarer. A PCGS POP 2 with 6 finer, whilst also a CAC POP 2 with only 2 CAC finer, this 1843-O $5 SMALL LETTERS AU58 PCGS CAC is one of the finest and a Condition Census example for the date and variety. PCGS Price Guide $12,500 with no CAC sale ever, in fact even in higher grades no comps are seen with almost no sales ever above AU55. The Fairmont Collection has a AU53 PCGS CAC that sold for $5,520 04/22 ST. The present AU58 PCGS CAC approved example has highly attractive orange-gold coloration, seldom seen on 1843-O $5. The surfaces are typically very heavily abraded; however, this coin is an exception both from the coloration and eye appeal and from the deep scuff-marks almost always seen on an 1843-O $5. The obverse is also well struck; however, some weakness is seen on the reverse as they typically come. Overall compared to other 1843-O $5 this is well above and beyond into the 99% percentile and should be treated as special both visually and for its rarity.
