The 1843-O Liberty Head Half Eagle, Small Letters variety, is a historically significant issue from the New Orleans Mint, with a mintage of just 19,075 pieces and a survival estimate of only 120 coins in all grades. This Small Letters variant is notably scarcer than its Large Letters counterpart, making it a highly desirable coin among collectors of Southern gold and pre-Civil War numismatics. With a CAC population of only three certified examples and just 11 finer, this coin's rarity and appeal are further underscored. The coin exhibits a vibrant yellow-gold hue with deeper orange-gold highlights amidst honest wear. The last auction record was for $3,450 for another XF45 PCGS CAC 02/23 HA, whilst an AU50 PCGS CAC sold for $4,920 11/22 ST. Given the significant increase in popularity for Half Eagle thanks to the Fairmont Collection and this coins absolutely breathing originality and color with this Southern charm and housed in an older holder, we cant recommend this piece enough.
