Tied For Second Finest, 1843 Gold Quarter Eagle is the rarest issue for the 1843, beating 1843-C $2.5 and 1843-D $2.5, a very rare occurrence for a P mint to be rarer than the southern branch mints. With only 125 survivors known today in all grades, 1843 $2.5 is rare in AU and finer, with the finest graded MS64. No CAC examples are approved at MS63 and only 1 is approved at MS64, which is tied up in a top collection. At MS63, this 1843 $2.5 is a PCGS POP 2, and clearly one of the finest firmly situated in the Condition Census. Commanding a PCGS Price Guide of $11,000 with the last sale 33 years ago in 1990 for $11,550! With the only relevant comp a less lustrous NGC MS64 for $12,000 01/22 which the same example is now being offered at $24,750, before that sale it sold in 2004. Safe to say these are rare and are never available. The present example has attractive lustrous yellow gold and is as original as it comes.
