1842-D $5 SM VF30 OGH PCGS CAC
Liberty Head Half Eagle
An important transitional year as the size of lettering and dates were edited. 1842 $5 is a great date as not only is it visually different from its successors, as the stars and proportions are similar to that of previous years, but it is also one of the more affordable, relatively speaking, to other Dahlonega mint examples. Roughly 200 exist today in all grades, of which the current examples gleams with original green-gold hues. The coin is struck with full dentils, even wear and with no hits or marks as seen on many vf. I would grade this an xf40 in todays market, as the eagle breast, feathers and liberty’s hair have minimal wear. This exact coin sold in 12/18 for $2,160 as a non-cac! Today, offered a year later with cac.
