1842-C $2.5 VF35 PCGS CAC
Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
One of rarest Charlotte Quarter Eagle, 1842-C $2.5 from a small mintage of 6,729 only 115 are estimated today. Of the 115 estimated, no more than a dozen retain natural surface. In fact there is a clear two-tier pricing structure for this coin with CAC for a good reason, as finding examples with original surface and good eye appeal is very tough for a Southern Branch Mint date. True Quarter Eagle numismatists are aware of the rarity of this date. The coin, however, has serious claims to an XF40, nonetheless, it shows the typical weakness on lady liberty as seen on all examples, whilst having a beautiful die-crack seen on the reverse near AMERICA. No CAC example in surrounding grade has sold for over a decade. An AU58 PCGS CAC sold in 2021 for $20,400, which today should bring substantially more.
