1842 $2.5 AU58 PCGS
Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
One of the rarest and lowest mintage Liberty Quarter Eagle, 1842 $2.5 from a small mintage of just 2,823 pieces, only 55 survivors exist today in all grades and condition. A near finest, Condition Census Tied for the Third Finest, PCGS POP 3/3 with only 2 in UNC, and only one CAC Pop 1/0.
With a PCGS Price Guide of $20,000 and no auction record ever for a pcgs au58 or any grade finer, save for an old NGC MS60 record 8 years ago. The only relevant comp is a lower graded AU55 PCGS CAC which sold for $14,500 10/17. Interesting fact, according to PCGS "between 1863 and 1915, this date was considered to be semi-unique (two known). It has several early auction records over $100 and the Taylor-Windle specimen brought $155 in 1908. While the various Southern U.S. branch mints are known for small mintages, in 1842 it was Philadelphia that struck the fewest quarter eagles, just 2,823 circulation-finish pieces. (Just one year earlier was the famously elusive 1841 quarter eagle issue, the "Little Princess.")" Likely the finest you will ever acquire for a proof-like fully struck at a price point that only has upside in our strong professional opinion.
