The 1841 Liberty Seated quarter, Type 2 without motto, is represented here by an exceptionally original survivor whose surfaces convey long-term preservation and minimal disruption from circulation. Although the Philadelphia Mint produced approximately 120,000 examples, comparatively few remain in Mint State today, and Uncirculated pieces of meaningful quality are encountered infrequently. A current survival estimate of roughly 300 pieces underscores how elusive the date becomes at higher grade levels.
Both sides exhibit a visually intricate and fully natural appearance marked by layered color and refined texture. The obverse fields are anchored by soft antique silver-gray tones infused with warm champagne and pale golden hues. These base colors are enlivened by subtle iridescence that shifts between muted aqua, sea-green, and faint cobalt-blue, most evident along the denticles, stars, and outer lettering. Liberty’s figure displays slightly richer warmth, with honey-gold and light amber accents collecting within the folds of the drapery and around the shield. The highest points retain a lighter silvery brightness, while the fields show a smooth, even satin texture with delicate micro-granularity consistent with undisturbed original metal. Under magnification, only light, shallow hairlines are visible, blending naturally into the surface and reinforcing the coin’s stable, unmolested character.
The reverse continues this cohesive presentation with marginally deeper overall toning. Steel-gray and antique silver dominate the fields and devices, complemented by olive-gold and soft bronze shades that concentrate around the eagle’s wings, shield, and olive branch. Along the periphery, flashes of blue-green and teal appear near the denticles and lettering, producing a gentle halo effect as the light shifts. The eagle’s feathers display a softly textured, almost velvety quality, with warmer golden highlights tracing the contours and cooler gray tones settling into the recessed feather lines. The shield shows strong contrast between pale silver vertical elements and warmer golden-gray recesses, adding depth and definition to the design.
The overall surface quality is smooth, cohesive, and lightly satiny rather than glossy, suggesting careful historical handling and long-term storage without evidence of cleaning or artificial alteration. The interplay of warm and cool coloration across both sides provides notable visual depth and rewards close inspection as the toning subtly evolves under changing light.
