1840 $5 MS62 PCGS CAC
1840 $5 MS62 PCGS CAC
Liberty Head Half Eagle
Turn off the decade and highly underrated issue as the first struck Philadelphia Mint Half Eagle. From a mintage of 137,382 approximately 275 are estimated today, most of which are clustered around XF and AU. In Uncirculated only a few examples exist. Finer than this MS62 there are likely 4 different examples with 2 CAC approved finer, the finer of which a MS65+ PCGS CAC sold for $240,000 01/22 HA. There are no MS64 and the last MS63 sold 20 years ago. Recently the market has realized how rare this coin is and recent comps have demonstrated so with AU58 PCGS CAC selling for $4,080 03/23 SB and $4,320 04/22 SB. The present example offered example is an extremely attractive example with intense deep orange-gold color reminiscent of honey gold. The luster has a Satin finish as nearly all 1840 $5 do, yet still remains flashy. The surface is remarkable mark-free for the grade. Dare we say it looks better than a MS62. A fresh coin that was placed with an astute collector for many years.
