The 1839-O $2.50 Classic Head Quarter Eagle is a historically significant and highly sought-after issue, marking the first gold coinage produced at the New Orleans Mint. It remains the only Classic Head gold coin of any denomination struck at this facility and is the sole New Orleans quarter eagle with the mintmark positioned on the obverse. With an original mintage of 17,781 and an estimated survival of just 400 pieces, its rarity and desirability continue to grow. This near-Mint State specimen boasts outstanding eye appeal, free from major marks or distractions, and features a rich golden-orange hue complemented by subtle reddish-amber and olive-green undertones. While the strike is strong for the issue, minor softness and some marks are noted, characteristic of early New Orleans Mint coinage. Beyond the rarity, historical importance, the grade and CAC approval, this coins color and eye appeal is frankly off the charts. With only ten examples graded finer by CAC, this piece represents a rare opportunity to acquire a premium early U.S. gold coin from an obsolete mint. No coin of similar eye appeal or toning has sold though most recently a lower grade CAC NGC AU55 sold for $13,200 08/24 ST. As time passes, offerings of this caliber will become increasingly scarce. If you needed one Classic Head Quarter Eagle for the type this is the coin to acquire.
