The 1839-O quarter eagle is historically and numismatically significant issue. It was the very first gold coin produced at the New Orleans mint. It is the only Classic Head issue of any denomination from this mint and the only New Orleans quarter eagle with the mintmark located on the obverse and thus a very popular one-year type coin. Typically seen with scuff-marks, bag marks and processed surface as the majority are, this examples is far from that. With medium russet centers which are contrasted by a deeper reddish-gold hue at the borders, the eye appeal and color on this coin is phenomenal. Some dirt is present in the recess as well as ample luster, all indicative of a Dirty Old Gold for this important one-year. Approximately 400 1839-O Quarter Eagles are estimated in all grades. No recent comps exist except for a AU55 NGC CAC that sold for $8,100 03/21 HA which comparatively this is better in all regards. Even two grades lower an XF45 CAC sold for $4,920 10/22 HA. We would grade this AU55 today, but we like our CAC Old Fatty Holder type coins as is.
