The 1839/8 $10 Liberty Head eagle, Type of 1838 with the distinctive Covered Ear design, represents an important and highly desirable early issue within the Liberty Head eagle series, one of only two coins struck with this short-lived type alongside the 1838 eagle. From a modest mintage of just 25,801 pieces, it is estimated that only about 225 examples survive today, with most survivors showing heavy circulation, making the issue scarce in any grade and especially desirable for collectors assembling early Liberty Head gold by type. This CAC-approved example offers pleasing originality and strong visual appeal on both sides. CAC-approved examples of this elusive early eagle are notably difficult to locate, and we are pleased to have sold last year a different XF45 PCGS CAC as well. With CAC population at just 5 approved with 11 finer, the combination of rarity, historical importance as a two-year type, and superior quality within the grade ensures this specimen will draw strong attention from advanced collectors and early gold specialists alike.
