Capped Bust Half Dollar
The 1839 Capped Bust Half Dollar, formerly known as the 1839 Reeded Edge Half Dollar, is the second rarest of the type. 1839 is a numismatically important date because it is usually the last year or first year of a type and has long been a favorite Year set for many. 1839 Seated Liberty Half Dollar also has a Reeded Edge, thus PCGS has since started calling this issue a 1839 Capped Bust Half Dollar; however, since this coin was certified 30 years ago in an Old Green Holder it still shows the previous Reeded Edge name on it. The present coin has everything you need in a R.E Capped Bust Half. If you were in need of one coin for the type it should be this. No comps exist, but the last 2 PCGS AU58 were for non-CAC that sold for $2,200 08/23 SD and $2,050 01/23 DL. We have handled attractive MS62 whose surfaces were inferior to this present example. Firstly the coin screams luster, there is close to no wear seen on the high point and the color with soft gold and its eye appeal is exquisite. The reverse looks like a MS64 and the obverse a MS63. We wouldn't have thought much if it were in a MS63 holder, as many do. Nonetheless, we do not mind calling this a GEM slider.
